How to Read a Certificate of Analysis
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is independent lab proof of what’s actually in a vial. If you buy research materials, knowing how to read one is the single best way to protect your work — whether you buy from us or anyone else. Here’s the plain-English guide.
What a COA actually is
A COA is a report from a laboratory that has tested a specific batch of material. It answers two questions that matter more than any marketing claim: is this the compound it’s supposed to be (identity), and how pure is it (purity). A real COA is tied to a specific batch or LOT number — not a generic spec sheet, but the actual results for the material in front of you.
The five things to check on any COA
- Identity
Does the report confirm the compound is what you ordered? Look for the product name matching your order.
- Purity percentage
Usually shown as a number like “>99%.” Higher is better. This is typically measured by HPLC (see glossary).
- Batch / LOT number
The COA should list a batch or LOT number — and it should match the number printed on the vial. If they don’t match, the certificate isn’t for your product.
- Testing laboratory
Who ran the test? An independent, third-party lab is the gold standard. A report with no lab named is a red flag.
- Test date
A recent date tells you the results reflect current material, not a years-old sample.
“Third-party tested” — what it really means
A lot of sellers say it. Fewer mean it. There’s an important difference:
In-house testing
The seller tests their own product and reports their own results. Better than nothing — but they’re grading their own homework.
Third-party testing
The material is sent to an independent laboratory with no stake in the outcome, and that lab’s report is what you see. This is the standard worth insisting on.
How to verify a COA is genuine
- Match the LOT number
Find the LOT on the vial label and confirm it matches the LOT on the certificate.
- Look for a way to verify it yourself
The best sellers let you pull the exact certificate for your batch — for example, a QR code on the label that links straight to it. No logins, no “email us and wait.”
- Check that the lab is real and independent
A named, third-party lab you can look up beats an unnamed “internal” result every time.
Green flags & red flags when sourcing
Green flags
- A COA is available for every product
- The batch/LOT on the COA matches the vial
- Testing is done by a named third-party lab
- You can verify it yourself (scan or lookup)
- Clear “research use only” labeling
Red flags
- No COA, or “COA available on request” that never arrives
- A generic certificate not tied to a batch
- No lab named on the report
- Purity claims with nothing to back them
- Prices that seem too good to be true
